Was elected to the Supreme Council - Reconstituent Seimas 1990 - 1992.
Born on 24 December 1945 in Utena in a large family (four brothers and on s sister) into a family of teachers of the Lithuanian language.
Father Rapolas Šaltenis - a writer, his grandmother was A Vienuolis-Žukauskas, a famous Lithuanian writer, sister.
Finished Utena secondary school.
In 1962-1963 - studied at Vilnius University.
In 1963-1966 - served in the Soviet Army.
In 1969-1972 - worked at the editorial board of scenarios of the Lithuanian Cinema Studio. Wrote stories, novelettes, novels, plays, scenarios. He wrote his first book Atostogos 16 years ago. In 1997 Producer R. Tuminas staged his play Lituanica at the Academic Drama Theatre.
Member of the Union of the Lithuanian Writers, member of the Society of Cinematographists of Lithuania, co-operates with the actors of the Youth theatre.
One of the founders and Editors of cultural weekly Šiaurės Atėnai.
In 1994-1996 - editor-in-chief of the daily Lietuvos aidas.
Former member of the Sąjūdis Seimas.
In 1990-1992 - Deputy of the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas.
In 1991 joined the Lithuanian volunteers.
Member of the Seimas since 1992.
Minister of Culture in the eight Government (XXIX) since 4 December 1996.
Vice Chairman of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives).
Married. Has two daughters.
Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.
Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Knesset of Israel.
