Born on 6 July 1931, in Anykščiai region into a family of workers.
In 1949-1954 - was imprisoned for anti-Soviet activity.
In 1955 - finished secondary school.
In 1955-1960 - studied at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (currently - Technical University). A physicist.
Habil. Doctor, Professor.
In 1960-1963 - worked at the Research Institute of Electrography as an engineer, later, as a chief engineer.
In 1963 - chief engineer, a senior lecturer, docent, professor at Vilnius University.
In 1990-1992 member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas.
Member of the Seimas since 1992.
In 1992-1996 - Deputy Chairman of the Seimas
Chairman of the organisation "Save the Children" (1996).
Chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party since 1991.
Married. Has three children.
Speaks English and Russian languages.
Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE.
Member of the Commission of Representatives of the Seimas and the US Lithuanian Community.
Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.
Member of the Parliamentary Group for the Relations with the Republic of Taiwan.
