Biography

Born in Joniškis region, the village of Medginai, on 16 May, 1922.

In 1936 passed examinations and was enrolled in the third form of Joniškis high school. Having finished six forms of high school returned to the village and worked on the farm, attended a private institute "Kalbaneum". In 1944 was conscripted to the soviet army. Took part in battles in Latvia, Curonia.

Demobilised in the summer of 1945. Till 1946 worked as an editor of broadcasts for the young at the Radio Committee and from the end of 1946 till 1947 for the daily "Tiesa". Since then he has not worked at any institution but devoted his life to literary career.

Merited cultural worker of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, a Lithuanian writer, publicist. Published 16 books for grown-ups and about 20 books for children. A winner of the State Prize, Lenin Prize, the Prize of the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia. His books are translated into more than 25 European and Asian languages.

Was an ardent philatelist, now takes interest in sport, fishing and beekeeping.

Was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, currently does not belong to any party.

Speaks English, Russian and German.

As the oldest member of the Seimas presided over the first sitting of the Seimas on 25 November 1996.

Wife Irena Litvinaitė is a journalist.
