Biography

Born in Varėna region, the village of Puvočiai on 25 December, 1958.

Expelled from secondary school for his religious and national convictions in 1976. Became engaged in the dissident movement. In 1977-1979 served in the Soviet army. Was among the 45 people from the Baltic States who undersigned the Memorandum demanding to condemn the Molotov -Ribbentrop pact in 1979. Published underground

publications, signed protest documents concerning violations in religious, national, political sphere as well as those of human rights. One of the organisers of the meeting held on 23 August, 1978 at the monument to Adomas Mickevičius, as well as those held on 16 February 1988 and 28 September 1988 in Vilnius.

In 1983-1991 worked at the Youth Theatre as an engineer.

Elected a deputy to the Council of the city of Vilnius in 1990. From October 1991 till the end of 1992 worked as Vice chairman of the Council of the city of Vilnius.

In 1992 was elected member of the 6th Seimas.

Belonged to the Lithuanian Freedom League till November 1988. A signatory of the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party which was re-established on 16 February 1989. Member of the Helsinki Group of Lithuania.

Member of the Christian Democratic Party.

Speaks Russian.

Wife Virginija is a specialist in the Lithuanian language. The family has three children.

Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Assembly of Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm of the Republic Poland.

A member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.
