Member of the Seimas 1996-2000
Born on 22 May 1951 in Klaipėda.
Till 1954 lived in the Inta Children's Home of Komi ASSR, because his mother was imprisoned in Inta camp. Upon returning to Lithuania in 1965 attended Vėžaičiai school, Klaipėda region.
After finishing Vilnius technological school worked at different Vilnius plants.
1978 - graduated from the Department of Philology of Vilnius University. Worked as a teacher in Vilnius region.
1983-1990 - a scientific research worker at the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Has published articles on literary criticism, philosophy, history and politics.
1988-1990 - member of Sąjūdis initiative group of Lithuania, member of the Sąjūdis Seimas Council, a secretary of Sąjūdis.
1989 - elected the USSR People's deputy.
1990-1992 - deputy of the Supreme Council - the Reconstutuent Seimas.
1990-1991 - Director General of the State Security Department.
Since 1993 - Vice Chairman of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives).
Speaks English, Polish and Russian languages.
Wife Nijolė is folklore researcher. The family have son Povilas and daughter Beatričė.
Head of the Seimas Delegation to the Baltic Assembly, Deputy Head of the Seimas Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Head of the Assembly of Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.
Was member of eight Seimas Groups for the Relations with foreign countries.
In 1998 was appointed Director General of the State Security Department by Decree of the President of the Republic of Lithuania.
